Fire safety tips can help you keep your holiday merry and bright – in the right ways.
The holidays are here! They’re a beautiful time of year, but they’re also busy. To help you stay safe in the midst of this hectic season, here are a few holiday fire safety tips you should employ.
While you cook.
Never leave your stovetop unattended. We know the holidays get busy, but if you’re stepping away from the stove have another adult keep an eye on it for you. Also, set timers for anything cooking in the oven. Your phone likely has a built-in timer you can carry with you throughout the house so you never leave anything cooking for too long!
While you deck the halls.
If you’re hanging strands of light this holiday season, check each strand for frayed wiring or broken bulbs before you string it up. Also, make sure you limit the number of light strands you connect to a single power source (e.g. outlet, extension cord) to three. When decorating the exterior of your home, hang the lights securely without the use of nails or staples, which increase your risk for electric fires.
While your kids play.
It’s heartbreaking but true; the number of household fires and deaths related to them that are caused by children playing with matches spikes around the holidays. As you light your candles around your house to create a festive atmosphere, be mindful of your kids watching you. Teach fire safety, and keep matches well out of reach.
